British ports upgrade berthing assistance capabilities

Port of London Authority is upgrading propulsion and power systems on workboats to improve their performance for port services. The authority has sent berthing assistance and pilot vessels to Alicat Workboats yard in Great Yarmouth for repair and upgrades.

UK-based engine distributor EP Barrus has supplied John Deere engines to Alicat for this project. According to Barrus sales engineer Sam Pearson, PowerTech 6068 TFM 75 engines are being installed on these vessels. These are 6.8 litre engines that deliver 150 kW of power at 2,600 rpm, he told Tug Technology & Business.

Barrus has also supplied John Deere engines to a 12.75 m berthing assistance and pilot vessel that Associated British Ports has ordered for the ports of Ayr and Troon, in Scotland. This vessel was designed and built by Macduff Shipyards with a draught of 1.2 m and beam of 4.5 m.

Barrus supplied two PowerTech 6068 SFM 85 engines, each rated 239 kW at 2,600 rpm, said Mr Pearson. These are coupled to a ZF 305-3A gearbox with 2.423:1 ratio.

In a separate development, John Deere has introduced a new PowerTech engine to its Tier 3 range. Barrus unveiled the Powertech 4045 SFM 85 engine at the London Boat Show for high-speed leisure craft, patrol vessels and light-duty commercial vessels.

This is a 4.5 litre engine that can be configured to produce 205 kW at 2,600 rpm or 235 kW at 2,800 rpm. It uses a waste-gated turbocharger that provides greater torque at low and middle rpm ranges, has replaceable cylinder liners, options for left and right-hand oil filters, low profile heat exchanger and water-cooled exhaust manifold.

Barrus said Powertech 4.5 litre engines will meet US Environmental Protection Agency marine Tier 3 emissions requirements and IMO Tier II standards. John Deere is seeking approval from ABS, Lloyd’s Register, DNV GL and Bureau Veritas for these engines.
